Disaster Service responders receive free specialized Red Cross training to prepare them to execute vital tasks in field operations, disaster assessment, mass care, sheltering and mental health operations. Flexible schedules let each Disaster Services volunteer develop his or her own individual Red Cross schedule.
Disaster Action Teams are on the frontlines of providing emergency assistance and are the first face of the American Red Cross that people see after they have experienced a local disaster.
They are out on the streets and in the communities, day and night, to meet the needs of families and residents with food, clothing, temporary housing, mental health support and emergency supplies. In the Mecklenburg-Iredell area, the most common disaster to which the Red Cross responds is house and apartment fires.
The Disaster Action Teams work closely with the fire department to assist disaster clients in a timely and efficient manner, while assuring that their basic needs are met.
Disaster Preparedness
It’s important to prepare for possible disasters and other emergencies. Natural and human caused disasters can strike suddenly, at any time and anywhere. There are three actions everyone can take that can help make a difference: Get a Kit. Make a Plan. Be informed.
