1917 marks the year that the American Red Cross began operation in Caldwell County due to three distinct needs. The community was gathering resources as the United States was debating to enter the World War. Western North Carolina had been ransacked the previous year by a flood that destoryed most of the bridges and dams as well as all lines of communication with the outside world. The Spanish Flu epidemic was spreading across the nation and the local communities were in need of training and education.
The Red Cross has been fullfilling those missions and a whole lot more in Caldwell County since then.
In 2007 the Caldwell County chapter and the Catawba Valley chapter (Alexander and Catawba counites) combined forces to continue the good work and effort that the local volunteers and staff have done.
